Boys Lax: Will East comes back to beat Indians, 10-8

The Flames may have gone dim, but never went out. Williamsville East came back from a three-goal deficit at halftime to beat the West Seneca West Indians 10-8, in a Section VI Class B Boy’s Lacrosse quarterfinal matchup.

Late in the first quarter the scoring got going as the two teams went back and forth. Senior Austin Mascio and junior Jesse Broad scored for Indians as they led 2-1 after the first quarter.

Despite taking five fouls in the second quarter, West Seneca West kept the Flames from scoring when the Flames had a man-advantage. Senior Mike McCarthy and Broad expanded the West lead to three with 8 minutes to go in the second. Will East’s Dylan Avery took the ball on the ensuing faceoff and went right down the field to score. Broad and sophomore Evan Sherk got back-to-back goals. Flames’ sophomore Clayton Osborn scored with 44.8 seconds left in the half, cut the Indians’ lead to 6-3.

Will East took from the momentum end of the first half and went on to score seven unanswered goals in the second half.

Broad tried to lead a West come back scoring the Indians’ seventh goal and assisting on his team’s eighth and final goal of the night.

Broad ended the night with four goals and an assist for West Seneca West.

For the Flames, Avery and senior Drew Butler led the way with four goals each. Mitchell had three assists. Freshman Joe Amici was put in net for the Flames in the second half, stopping six shots.

Next: Williamsville East has sectional semi-final matchup with No. 1 seed Hamburg on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
