Cheektowaga cruises past Burgard 40-6

Coming back onto their home turf last night, the Cheektowaga Warriors was looking for a quick turn around after getting shut out by Grand Island last week, 34-0.

First-year head coach Kyle Lackie took to the field with his squad to face the Burgard Bulldogs. They came into the match up 1-0, winning a late-game thriller over East Aurora/Holland on Sept. 3.

Cheektowaga got out to a 12-0 lead from their running back Cameron Warburton and wide receiver Eric Bailey. Warburton bulldozed his way into the end zone to make it 6-0. Next possession quarterback Matt Barr delivered a perfect thrown ball to Bailey who took it to the house and extended the lead.

Burgard responded by driving down the field midway in the second quarter. Kire Eaglin threw a quick strike to his receiver Kevon Walker for a two-yard score and cut the lead in half.

Burgard’s next chance on offense ended with an interception as Eaglin’s pass was picked off by Jalen Henlon. On the next play, Barr threw his second touchdown pass to D’Mell Poston. The Warriors converted on the two-point conversion, heading into halftime up 20-6.

The second half saw Cheektowaga doubled up in points, mainly from the contribution of their run game. Henlon would get two touchdowns on the ground while Warburton would grab his second touchdown of the night.

Even when the passing was on point in the first half, Lackie was ecstatic to see both Warburton and Henlon’s ground attack, which became a nightmare to Burgard’s defense.

“Jalen is very quick and Cameron is a load to bring down,” said Lackie. “Its kind of like the old thunder and lighting thing that we have been talking about. It’s been working so far and were going to ride them as far as we can.”

Late into the fourth quarter, Henlon ran up the middle and got into the end zone for his second touchdown on the night, giving Cheektowaga a 40-6 lead and would be the final score once the clock hit zero.

Cheektowaga and Burgard are now 1-1 on the season; the Warriors will be on the road Sept. 17 facing Lewiston Porter for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. Burgard will host WNY Maritime Charter Sept. 17, their also scheduled to play at 7:00 p.m.
