Lois Garlow entered Monday afternoon’s match-up versus the St. Mary’s Lady Lancers needing just seven points to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Four shots in she nailed it. A 3-point shot did the trick early in the first quarter to put her in some very special company.
“I was so nervous before the game,” the senior said. “There were cupcakes and my Mom had balloons, I was thinking about how embarrassing it would be if I didn’t get it.”
Garlow, a 2018 WNYAthletics.com Top 25 Performer, carried over roughly 200 points from her time with the Park City Miners, a school roughly 30 miles outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. She’s been a varsity basketball player for all four years of her high school career, the past two at the Mount under coach Fran Snyder.
“Coach Fran brought it [the milestone] to my attention at the beginning of the year,” said Garlow. As a sophomore at Park City she remembers seeing a few basketballs in the trophy cases with 1,000 points written on them. After scoring 25 points in a game that season, she thought that one day it would be really cool to accomplish something like that.
“It really is an amazing accomplishment, I worked very hard. Earlier today my friend said to just go out and play my game and it will happen naturally.”
Garlow sunk her first basket of the game, an easy layup. She would miss her next shot but followed up shortly after with another basket from inside the paint. Her three-pointer was from the top of the circle. The game stopped so that the school could recognize Garlow for reaching the milestone. Her family and teammates celebrated with her on the court. Coach Snyder presented Garlow with a special basketball to commemorate the achievement.

Garlow finished the game with 31 points, leading all scorers before fouling out in the dying seconds.
The Lancers ultimately prevailed with a 78-72 win, improving their record to 19-3 overall and 9-1 in the league. St. Mary’s will play one final home game this coming Friday against Sacred Heart before closing out the regular season with road games against Frontier and Nardin next week.
The Thunder have two games remaining on the schedule: at Sacred Heart on Wednesday and then at home Friday against Nichols.
