Pioneer Claims Section VI Class B Championship

Pioneer may have slipped under the radar when looking at the standings mid-season, but there wasn’t any doubt in the team’s mind that they could win a Section VI Championship.

Earlier this evening, they did it.

The Lady Panthers scored in the first minute of the game, courtesy of junior Olivia Kempf , to top Iroquois 1-0 in the Section VI Field Hockey Class B Championship Game.

In the back-and-forth battle that would ensue, neither team would be able to add a tally on the scoreboard.

“It’s simply incredible – I can’t believe it, ” said Pioneer coach Jana Landahl. “To score in the first minute and then play such an exciting game to hold on for a 1-0 win.. I’m just so proud of my team.”

Iroquois put up a valiant effort but was unable to score the equalizer against a Pioneer defense that was relentless, challenging Iroquois at every opportunity.

“Playoffs are unpredictable, ” said Iroquois coach Pete Tonsoline. “You never know what you’re going to get, all bets are off. It’s disappointing to lose but I have to give Pioneer credit; they played a great game and deserve the win.”

Pioneer advances to Regionals at Penfield HS on Saturday where they will take on Section V’s Mendon @ 5pm.
