13 Players Found the Scoresheet Friday
Amherst, NY - Head Coach Jon Christiano was looking for more goal production out of his St. Joe's Marauders, after shaking up his line combinations Friday evening, his team got the message.
Senior Joshua Iuvino stole the show recording a hat-trick as the Marauders beat St. Mary's of Lancaster 7-0. They were the first goals of the season for Iuvino.
Among the moving pieces Friday was junior Max Gilbert, who moved up to the wing. Sophomore Ronald Pilat Jr. took Gilberts spot on defense. Midway through the 1st period the two, along with senior forward Anderson Cornwell combined for the Marauders 1st goal.
It was Pilat's first goal since becoming a member of the varsity program.
Gilbert fed Cornwell a nice pass in front of Lancers goaltender Adam Wanat, who turned away Cornwell's shot attempt. The rebound landed in front of Pilat who was trailing the play. Pilat buried the puck to give St. Joe's the early lead.
"I haven't played forward in a long time," said Gilbert. "At first I really didn't know what I was doing but as the game went on I became more comfortable."
The Lancers took a penalty just before time expired in the first period. With the man advantage, St. Joe's converted on the power play when Niko Mackiewicz scored 90 seconds into the second period.
It was the start of an offensive explosion for the Marauders, who were blanked just a week earlier.
Joshua Iuvino scored his first of 3 goals two-minutes later. Nolan Peiper and Jake Economou also scored for St. Joe's. Charlie Myszka and Johnny Provenzo chipped in two assists each.
"We needed to find some scoring," Christiano said after the win. "It's something we need to find out is if there's a natural goal-scorer. The effort though was good for the full three periods tonight."
Jackson Grande recorded the shutout for the Marauders turning away all 16 Lancer shots.
St. Mary's falls to 0-4 in the Monsignor Martin League, they will next host Canisius (5-1-0-0) on Saturday at Cheektowaga Town Rink at 8pm.
St. Joe's (4-4-1-1) will next play Bishop-Timon (4-4-0-0) on Saturday at Cazenovia, puck drop scheduled for 5:30.
