The Jamestown Red and Green are marching on to the state final four following a 69-64 victory over Section V’s Rush-Henrietta in Friday’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class AAA Far West Regional at Gates-Chili High School.
Dominic Gonzalez and Jaydian Johnson propelled Jamestown to the regional win, combining for 50 points to spark a high-powered Red and Green offensive attack. Johnson scored a game-high 29 points, while Gonzalez added 21 points. Avery Council equaled.
Johnson's game-high 29 points to guide Rush-Henrietta. With the win, Jamestown (19-3) advances to the state final four, where it will meet the winner of Port Washington (VIII) and Half Hollow Hills-East (XI) next Thursday at 7:45 p.m. at Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton.
The first half of Friday’s game was controlled by Jamestown, with a 3-pointer from Gonzalez beating the second-quarter buzzer to send the Red and Green into the break with an 38-27 advantage.
Gonzalez and Johnson were the best players on the floor throughout the contest, scoring 16 and 17 points, respectively during the first half to power Jamestown to the double-digit halftime lead. Rush-Henrietta made a late-first-half run before Gonzalez' big shot, working what was an 11-point lead midway through the half down to five down the stretch of the second quarter. Council led the Royal Comets with 13 points during the first two quarters of play.
Jamestown asserted itself to begin the second half, mounting a 16-point lead with 5 minutes remaining in the third quarter. Rush-Henrietta responded by trimming its deficit down to five with 2 minutes remaining in the third, but Jamestown came storming back, with Elijah Farmer knocking down a 3-pointer with 50 seconds remaining until the fourth to improve the lead back to 14 points. The Royal Comets responded with an inside jumper of their own to trim it to a 12-point lead entering the fourth.
Rush-Henrietta outscored Jamestown in the fourth, but it was for naught, as the Red and Green managed to hang on to win by five points.
