Section VI Division I Wrestling Championships Seeds Announced

Official seeds for the 74th Annual Section VI Championships and 60th NYS tournament qualifier is listed below.

Section VI Division I dual meet and Class A champion Niagara Wheatfield boasts three top seeds led by defending sectional champion and NYS 5th place winner Te’Shaun Mathews at 145-pounds. Defending champion Eian Peterson and returning state tournament qualifier Joe Cicco also earned top seeds for the Falcons who have a tournament high nine wrestlers in the top-4 seeds of their respective weight classes.

Class AA champion Williamsville North/East and Clarence each have two top seeded wrestlers while the Spartans have five, top-4 seeded wrestlers. Clarence and Amherst each have four wrestlers in the top-4 seeds of their respective brackets. Starpoint, Lancaster, Lockport, Hamburg, Orchard Park, and Frontier all have one top seeded athlete.  

Only five returning Section VI Division I champions are back for the 2024 sectional championships but eleven wrestlers with state tournament experience led by defending NYS champion Cam Catrabone are entered in the tournament. Section VI is guaranteed to have two first time state qualifying wrestlers at five different weights after wrestling is complete on Saturday night.

Catrabone, Mathews, and Orchard Park’s Jack MacDonald (7th, 189-pounds) are the only three wrestlers in the Section VI Division I championships returning with 2023 NYS tournament place finishes.

Three brackets feature two wrestlers with state tournament experience. At 160-pounds, Wheatfield’s Cicco earned the top seed with a 2-1 head to head record this season against defending Section VI champion Dylan Gagnon from North Tonawanda who is the 2-seed at the weight.

At 145, Mathews and teammate Chase Richards at the 1 and 2-seeds, respectively, both returning with state tournament experience. At 138, top seeded Clarence junior AJ Didas and 2-seeded NW junior Garrett Chase both qualified for the state federation tournament.

The 2024 Section VI Division I Championships are scheduled to begin at 10am on Saturday, Feb. 10th at Williamsville North High School. Finals are expected to begin at 3pm.

The sectional champion at each weight class and the bracket’s runner-up (or true second place winner) advance to the NYS federation championships, Feb. 23-24 at MVP Arena in Albany.
