Sweet Home Girls Earn First Varsity Wrestling Program Dual Win

The newly formed Sweet Home girls’ varsity wrestling team earned its first dual meet win on Tuesday night at home with a 36-18 victory over Section V’s Alexander.

Seven Panthers claimed victories in the dual including four head to head match winners and two exhibition matches after the varsity contest.

“Last year, I only had four girls, we weren’t quite a ‘team’ yet, and I was a volunteer coach,” said Sweet Home girls varsity head coach Bailey Crouse, a 2019 Sweet Home Wrestling program alumnus & Wall of Fame honoree and recent University at Buffalo graduate. “What I am most proud of is these girls’ work ethic. This was our first dual ever, and they went out there and crushed it. I talk to them every single day and tell them ‘you have the power to do what you want to do…you just need to do it.’ I love what I can do for these girls.”

Winning matches in the varsity dual for Sweet Home against Alexander were Ava Lockridge, Kaitlyn Mieczkowski, Georgia Zorich, Sofia Guadagna, Jayden Crouse, Yaletsy Tamayo, and Angel Gonzalez.

Lockridge earned a pin in both the varsity dual at 107-pounds and an exhibition match pin. Mieczkowski earned a decision at 114 in the varsity dual as well as a pin in an exhibition match. Zorich was a major decision winner at 120 and Guadagna earned a pin at 126 in the varsity dual for Sweet Home while Crouse, Tamayo, and Gonzalez all accepted forfeits.

So far this season, Sweet Home has competed in the North Tonawanda Ladyjacks Tournament, Linda C. Knuutila Memorial Tournament, Eden Girls Varsity Tournament, and most recently at the Chautauqua Lake Girls Invitational where they placed 4th overall in the team scoring led by 126-pound champion Sofia Guadagna.

A pair of Panthers in Zorich and Tamayo will represent Sweet Home at the 2nd NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling Invitational on Friday, Jan. 26th at SRC Arena in Syracuse.
