Wilson senior Hamza Merrick has been selected as the WNY Athletics Boys Wrestler of the Week presented by Petruzzi Insurance Agency for the week of Monday, February 24th – Saturday, March 1st, 2025.
Hamza captured the NYS Division II 285-pound title over the weekend in Albany at the 62nd state wrestling championships to become Wilson’s first champion in program history. As the 3-seed, he avenged three losses this season and upset the 2-seed in the semifinal before securing a last second takedown over the 1-seed and returning NYS champion in the title match. Hamza finishes his senior campaign with a 40-8 record and over 150 wins, 100 pins, and three NYS place finishes for his career.
After becoming the fan favorite across all of NYS over the last two seasons, Hamza goes out after having one of the most remarkable runs to a NYS title in recent memory. He is a personable young man with a great sense of humor.
On Monday following the state tournament, Hamza committed to wrestle after high school for Coach Maute at SUNY Niagara.
