WNY Athletics Boys Wrestler of the Week presented by Sign Gypsies WNY: Willy Wortkoetter

St. Francis junior Willy Wortkoetter has been selected as the WNY Athletics Boys Wrestler of the Week presented by Sign Gypsies WNY for the week of Monday, January 6th – Saturday, January 11th, 2025.

Willy went 6-0 last week and capped it off with Eastern States individual and team titles in Albany. As the top seed at 285-pounds, Willy dominated the bracket at the 21st Eastern States Classic picking up four pins on the way to the title match. In the final, Willy met fellow returning NYS place winner and large school title hopeful Kamdyn Dorchester from Section III’s Carthage. In the third period, Willy broke a 0-0 tie with an escape, ultimately holding on to win 1-0 for 1st place while picking up a valuable head to head victory and a coveted Eastern States title for his resume. As well, the Red Raiders dominated in the final standings, securing the team title by 47 points. Willy is only the 11th Eastern States champion hailing from a Section VI or Msgr. Martin school in the twenty-one years of the tournament.

According to his coaches, Willy is a hard worker who quietly leads by example and always accepts new challenges. So far this season, Willy is 33-4 while taking on elite talent at the Powerade Invitational, Armbar Duals, and Eastern States. Willy is a returning 2024 NYS finalist and also standouts on the gridiron while carrying a high honor roll GPA. Willy is already committed to the United States Military Academy at West Point after high school.
