Orchard Park senior Sophia Saffrin has been selected as the WNY Athletics Girls Wrestler of the Week presented by Petruzzi Insurance Agency for the week of Monday, December 23rd – Sunday, December 29th, 2024.
Sophia captured the 132-pound title at the Eden Girls Wrestling Tournament on Saturday posting a perfect 5-0 record, one of only three wrestlers to do so at the event. Sophia was impressive with picking up four pins and one technical superiority on the day. So far this year, she has four top-4 tournament place finishes.
In middle school, Sophia joined the modified wrestling team and has been on the varsity wrestling team all four years of high school. She has been instrumental in the growth and popularity of girls’ wrestling at Orchard Park High School. According to her coaches, Sophia is fiercely competitive, a natural leader, and an incredible role model for younger athletes.
In addition to wrestling, Sophia is a talented musician and drumline leader for the Quaker Marching Band. She is also a star rugby player on the pitch for Coach Henrich and has been a part of two NYS club championship teams.
Sophia intends to continue her studies at University at Buffalo next year majoring in biology.
