Tyler Edholm’s third period hat trick set the stage for Section VI’s Sweet Home to score a stunning 6-4 win over Section III’s Auburn in the NYSPHSAA Division II semifinal that was played at HarborCenter.
The win punches the Panthers ticket to Sunday’s championship game (3 p.m.) where they will face West Seneca West. The same team that beat Sweet Home in the Section VI title game on Feb 26.
It will mark the first time two Section VI teams will face each other in the title game.
Sweet Home opened the scoring with a short-handed goal by Blake Russo. Auburn answered with goals from John Malandruccolo and Richard Szakalski.
Dan Lund tied it at 2-2 in the final minute of the second period.
Tyler Edholm netted the Panthers third fourth and fifth goals.
Minutes after Edholm’s second tally, Auburn pulled within a goal, 4-3, thanks to Brendan Williams. Williams got the Maroons fourth goal as well.
Sweet Home added an empty-net goal with nine seconds left.
