Spartans season begins with rout of crosstown rival

Williamsville North wasted little time Friday night in dispatching crosstown rival Williamsville East. The Spartans scored on all of their first half possessions en route to a 40-0 road win during the opening week of play in Section VI football.

Senior QB Joe Nusall led Williamsville North by tossing three TD passes and rushing for another. Senior Dylan Kelly (WR) caught two of those TD passes and also came up with a first quarter interception.

The theme during week one practices for the Spartans was execution and they executed head coach Mike Mammoliti’s game plan to perfection Friday. “That’s the way we wanted to start the season, “Mammoliti said.

Defensively, North didn’t give Williamsville East much room to work. The Spartans controlled the line of scrimmage from start to finish. The Flames skill players were kept in check for much of the game. Late in the fourth quarter senior QB Colson Skorka began to find some chemistry with junior receiver Cal Shifflet, connecting with him a couple of times on their final drive but time ran out on Williamsville East.

Dylan Mann and David Bass each had a rushing touchdown for Williamsville North. Freshman Zaire Leonard saw quite a bit of time in his varsity debut. He did a nice job in defensive coverage and had a couple of nice runs as a ball carrier.  He’s worth keeping an eye on.

“We can’t ever be complacent. We have to keep getting better and not let up,” Mammiloti said adding “We played a really good game today but there’s always room for improvement.”

The Flames will have a chance to regroup and learn from the loss before hosting Kenmore East (0-1) next Friday in a divisional clash.

The Spartans will play at Clarence Friday at 7pm.
