Lockport freshman Kevin Daskavitz has been selected as the WNY Athletics Wrestler of the Week for the ninth week of the 2019-2020 season (Tuesday, 1/21 – Saturday, 1/25).
Daskavitz captured the 182-pound Gary Gross Memorial Tournament title at Medina on Saturday, defeating a Section V state qualifier place winner in the semifinal before taking down defending Section VI champion Ceric Kristan in the final, 7-5. Also, in doing so, Daskavitz earned revenge for a finals loss to the Fredonia junior on January 10th in Lockport.
Although only a freshman, this is Daskavitz’s third season in the varsity lineup. While upper classmen tend to dominate the heavier weight classes in high school, at 24-3 this season, Daskavitz has held his own against some of WNY’s top competition. Daskavitz is a rising star in the WNY ranks and is an emerging team leader for the Lions. Kevin’s coaches characterize him as a hard worker and one who sets the example both on the mat and in school, as he is an honor roll three sport student-athlete, also playing soccer and baseball.
