St. Joe’s senior Sullivan Walsh has been selected as the WNY Athletics Wrestler Of the Week for Week 9 of the 2018-2019 season (1/21 – 1/27/2019).
Sullivan went 9-0 and recorded three pins and two major decisions last weekend at the CHSAA Dual Meet Championships to help guide the Marauders to a 7-2 record over the two-day event. In big matches against some of the ‘Catholic league’s’ top teams, Walsh earned pins against Monsignor Farrell and St. Anthony’s and also earned a critical decision win that helped St. Joe’s over Chaminade.
Walsh is currently 24-10 wrestling between 170 and 182-pounds with runner-up finishes at the Teike-Bernabi and Ripley tournaments. Sullivan also competed at Eastern States in the second weekend of January.
Working his way up from the St. Joe’s kids club as an 8th grader, Walsh spent a handful of seasons as a ‘backup,’ practicing and preparing to break into the varsity lineup. Currently, Sullivan is a team captain and is closing in on seventy-five career wins. He was a Msgr. Martin All-Catholic runner-up last season and took 3rd at CHSAA ‘Catholic states.’
According to ‘Joe’s head coach Pete Kennedy, Sullivan has carried the highest GPA on the team in each quarter for the last four years. Walsh has also competed in Brazilian jiu-jitsu since middle school.
“‘Sully’ epitomizes ‘Marauder Style,'” stated Coach Kennedy. “He’s intense, aggressive, and gives maximum effort. Throughout the season he has prepared, persevered, and performed. We are excited to see what he will accomplish over the next month.”
