Dual meet results and highlights for the week of Tuesday, February 4th – Thursday, February 6th, the last week of dual meets for the 2019-2020 season in WNY.
Tuesday, February 4th
#2 Iroquois 55 – Letchworth (V) 18
The Chiefs completed their dual schedule with an inter-section win over a quality Indians squad in Elma. Iroquois swept 99 t0 132-pounds, however Letchworth won five of the six weights between 138 and 182. The Chiefs won six head to head matches versus five for the Indians who were also affected by forfeits as they conceded four weights. Letchworth has now wrestled all five of Section VI’s top ranked small schools this season. Iroquois finishes the season with a 27-4 dual meet record.
#3 Clarence 54 – Attica/Batavia (V) 33
The Red Devils concluded their dual meet slate for the season with a home win over a quality Blue Devils squad at home. Clarence captured nine wins in the dual, two by forfeit, and all seven head to head wins were by pin. The Red Devils finish the 2019-2020 campaign at 19-5 overall.
North Tonawanda 49 – CSAT 21
The NFL schedule officially came to a close for this year with the ‘Jack’s win over the Eagles. NT finishes the season at 3-4 in league and 13-8 overall. The Lumberjacks host the Class A tournament on Saturday.
St. Mary’s 47 – Gow School 40
Numbers were in the Lancers’ favor on Tuesday night as they collected five forfeits and won three head to head matches, however the Ravens earned seven wins and five head to head matches all by pin to make the team score close.
Akron 46 – Alden/Depew 36
A full lineup benefited the Tigers in a non-league win over the Bulldogs as they collected three forfeits in the contest. While Akron collected seven head to head wins only three were by pin, compared to five head to head wins and pins (plus one forfeit) for Alden.
Tonawanda 48 – Sweet Home 36
The Warriors won eight matches and pinned in all seven of their head to head wins to capture an ECIC non-league rivalry win over the neighboring Panthers.
Wednesday, February 5th
HM St. Joe’s 40 – HM Amherst 26
Both current area large school honorable mention squads squared off at St. Joe’s with the Marauders coming out on top with a well earned win. ‘Joe’s won nine matches to Amherst’s six and earned four pins to the Tigers’ one. For having fourteen competed matches, only five pins and nine full, six minute matches made for an out of the ordinary high school box score albeit indicating a well wrestled match between two quality teams. The big win of the night was Ryan Bitka over Caleb Lesswing in a bout between two top tier local heavyweights.
St. Mary’s 39 – Canisius 32
Zach Ash wrestled for the first time after missing a month due to injury to help lead the Lancers over the Crusaders for the first time since 2014. Daniel Rhodes was a big winner for St. Mary’s as well in pinning a returning All-Catholics runner-up. Overall the Lancers won seven weights to Canisius’s six and pinned in five of them. St. Mary’s finishes the season with an even 2-2 Msgr. Martin record. The Crusaders’ Joe Dixon is creeping closer to the program’s single season wins record.
Thursday, February 6th
CSAT 46 – Gow 36
The Eagles and Ravens officially brought the 2019-2020 dual meet season in WNY to a close on Thursday night. CSAT captured eight wins to Gow’s seven but collected four forfeits. Both squads split in head to head wins at four each with three pins going to the Eagles and two for the Ravens. Acknowledgement must be given to each of these programs for a tremendous season in which both squads enjoyed solid participation and some competitive dual meets.
